Cyn blynyddoedd hwyr y 19fed ganrif, roedd y tir o dan goed gydag ychydig ffermydd a bythynnod yma ac acw, ac Ystad Pwllycrochan oedd yn berchen arno. Roedd datblygiad y dref yn gysylltiedig â gwerthiant yr ystad yn 1865 ac i sefydliad Cwmni Bae Cowyn ac Ystâd Pwllycrochan wedi hynny yn 1875.
Am eu bod yn gwybod am fanteision mynediad hawdd ar y rheilffordd o ardaloedd dinesig gogledd orllewin Lloegr, a phosibiliadau datblygu cyrchfan ffasiynol newydd, gwerthodd y Cwmni’r tir fel plotiau adeiladu. Yr Ystâd oedd yn rheoli beth allai gael ei adeiladu ar y darnau tir, gyda pharcdir blaenorol yr ystâd wedi’i glustnodi ar gyfer y tai gorau. Erbyn 1901 roedd poblogaeth y dref wedi tyfu i 8,689.
