The “dolos” described here has now (October 2014) been removed from its location near the entrance to the footpath and cycle path to the beach, near the railway station (as shown below).
This concrete unit is known as a “dolos” it weighs approximately 5 tons – 22,000 of these structures were cast and used in the major coast protection works in the 1980s. The sea defence works are designed to withstand a storm of severity likely to occur on average once in every 100 years.
