About the Colwyn Bay Heritage Group

We are the Colwyn Bay Heritage Group. Our aim is to make the heritage and history of the Colwyn Bay easily accessible and better known amongst those who live here or are  interested in understanding more about the town.

We have published a number of booklets encouraging heritage walks around the area and have made use of  the latest technology to develop inter generational interest and collected a comprehensive archive of people’s memories of events and activities in the area.

We’ve already produced an activity pack on the town’s heritage for schools and facilitated a range of inter generational heritage discussions.

We have developed a website which is easily accessible and gives a comprehensive picture and detailed information on the heritage and history of the  area. It a can be downloaded to a variety of different digital devices.

We also feature the Colwyn Bay Timeline. Check it out to see the fascinating development of the Colwyn Bay area over time.

In recent years the heritage group has contributed to the Imagine Colwyn Bay initiative and the Imagine Digital Colwyn Bay Trail, which can be accessed here.

We have also taken over responsibility for the quarterly Then & Now local history discussions, working in partnership with others to promote exhibitions, and organised and supervised regular local guided walks.

Our projects

Heritage Walks

We’ve developed a walk around the town centre as well as an informative booklet which will be a guide to the many interesting buildings in Colwyn Bay, including Theatr Colwyn which is the oldest Theatre in the UK.

Working with Tape Community Music and Film and local people of all ages we have also produced an audio accompaniment to the Heritage Walk. This is available to download from this website. The group hope to develop more walks in the future.

A walk is also available based on the churches and chapels of the town.

The Heritage Group has also worked with Old Colwyn (East) Residents Association to produce the Old Colwyn Heritage Walk.

We’ve also been able to republish an updated version of the Rhos-on-Sea Heritage Walk booklet, with money awarded through the Imagine Colwyn Bay project.

A Children’s History Activity Pack

We’ve worked with Colwyn Bay’s Ysgol Pendorlan to develop a local history activity pack which links in with the Heritage Walk and the National Curriculum.

A Time Capsule

The time capsule project developed from an idea some young people had after they had worked on the audio trail. We have placed a time capsule containing articles and items from the present day into the recently renovated Theatr Colwyn. The capsule will be opened in 50 years time.

Recorded Memories

We’re recording the personal stories and history of older members of the community, which will be made available in booklet form and on the Website.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the group get in touch via our contact form. We are always happy to welcome more volunteers.
