This attractive building was built in 1933-7 to a design by the notable local architect, Sidney Colwyn Foulkes and replaced the earlier building of the Maypole Dairy. It was built for, and originally occupied by, the W.S.Wood department store, and was probably the most prestigious shop in the town and for many miles around. William S. Wood’s monogram survives in the bronze flower boxes at first floor level.
