This terrace of commercial properties, designed by Booth, Chadwick and Porter, the principal architects to the Pwllycrochan Estate Company, and built in 1887, is a good example of the major phase of Colwyn Bay’s development as a resort and commercial centre.
The row of nine shops in glazed red brick, eight with peaked gables and the ninth with a tower were built by Edward Foulkes, the father of the architect, Sydney Colwyn Foulkes. The W.H.Smith & Sons premises are an excellent example of the house style the company first introduced in the 1920s, and the glazing in its canopy shows Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dante and Dickins.
